If you’ve been keeping up with things, you know that the upcoming fight of Tito Ortiz versus Forrest Griffin is not the first time that these two superlative fighters have been in the ring. Newcastle and Gateshead are eagerly anticipating the start of Evolution 2008, a four-day urban music festival that takes place at a number of venues throughout the North East. The festival offers a varied programme of gigs, seminars and talent shows, culminating in a massive two-stage outdoor gig on Bank Holiday Monday.
Evolution promises to bring some of the finest musical talent from home and abroad to the North East. However, it plans to provide a platform for local musicians too and will stage a talent night at Northumbria University to give top local bands an opportunity to be seen and heard.
Budding local talent might also want to attend some of the festival’s industry seminars, which should give attendees a real insight into the music business. Former EMI chairman, Tony Wadsworth, will be chairing one of the most eagerly anticipated seminars, which will be called ‘What’s happened to the record industry?’ Seminars are free, although tickets must be booked in advance as places are strictly limited.
Evolution has 10 gigs in this year’s programme, which will be staged in six different venues throughout Newcastle and Gateshead, including The Sage in Gateshead and The Cluny and Digital in Newcastle. Among those playing are 92-year-old David Honeyboy Edwards, a Grammy award performer who is arguably the most experienced musician of the whole festival. You’ll also be able to catch Mercury Music prize-nominated singer Seth Lakeman performing, as well as some great international acts, including The Blackbyrds, a jazz-funk ensemble from Washington DC, and French DJs Ivan Smagghe and Brodinski.
As always, the highlight of the four-day event is 3volution, a huge outdoor bank holiday gig. 3volution will take place over two stages at Spillers Wharf and Baltic Square on Monday 26th May from 12pm until 11pm. This bank holiday event was previously known as Freevolution. However, organisers have now decided to charge a £3 entry fee that will be donated to festival charity Wateraid, so the name of the festival has been appropriately changed to 3volution.
The line-up of this year’s 3volution Festival is one of the best ever, boasting some great names and a wide range of musical styles. Indeed, some of the bands that will be performing at this year’s outdoor event include Brit award winner Kate Nash, hotly tipped folk singer Lightspeed Champion, Mike Skinner’s The Streets, Brazilian electro-pop band CSS and the hotly-tipped Duffy, who recently had a number one hit with her single ‘Mercy’. In addition to this big bands, you will also be able to catch some of the hottest up-and-coming acts, including Glasvegas, who won an NME award this year, as well as The Whip, This Ain’t Vegas, Does It Offend You Yeah and many more.
