The Native American Music Awards, affectionately known as the Nammys, were created more than 10 years ago as a way to provide indigenous musicians from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America with a forum for national exposure. Essentially the Grammys for American Indian music, the Nammys have succeeded in their goal of bringing indigenous music to the world’s consciousness by presenting top-flight Native music that otherwise might never be widely heard.

Flutist of the Year
Jan Michael Looking Wolf

Jan Michael Looking Wolf, a Kalapuya Native American from Grand Ronde, Oregon, is nothing less than a flute shaman. And Unity (Cedar Feather Productions) finds him playing and composing at his mystical best — and solo. Both serene and spiritual, this music could be the soundtrack of a vision quest. “Unity” is a masterful performance, and songs such as “Elder’s Hope,” “Strong Elk,” and “Seventh Direction” touch the imagination and the soul.

The Looking Wolf Project is the artist’s rock-band side. Imagine if Pearl Jam crashed into Jethro Tull on the way to a Robert Mirabal concert. That is the essence of the musical amalgamation you find on this groundbreaking collection. A magnificent blend of bombastic hard rock and Native-flute originality with cutting-edge songs like “Wind Jammer,” “Fire-n-Water,” and “Phoenix Rising,” The Looking Wolf Project is a must-have for fans of well-crafted flute music.

About Cowboys & Indians
The Premier Magazine of the West

An international magazine of the highest quality, Cowboys & Indians encompasses everything exceptional about the American West: history and legend, hardworking people, dramatic vistas, enduring values. C&I is designed to appeal to a wide audience of Western enthusiasts. It speaks to everyone from the people who live it to those who simply love or long for the Western lifestyle.

Of course, the West means more than, well, cowboys and Indians.

We reflect all the West has come to signify to an ever-growing number of people who regard it as not merely a geographic locale but also a state of mind and a way of life. The West is chili cook-offs and haute cuisine, honky-tonks and symphony orchestras, rodeos and Western art, faded blue jeans and designer belt buckles. C&I balances past and present, tradition and innovation, and classical and cutting edge as it pays respectful tribute to the Old West and offers exciting previews of new horizons.

About the Author:

My name is Brent Haines, founder of Wood Sounds Flutes. As an engineer, my life is making people’s dreams into reality. As a maker, I feel greatly blessed to be able to create wooden Native American style flutes that allow people to turn their dreams and feelings into music magic. Over the years, I have helped hundreds of people begin playing the flute and have seen them create magical experiences. I have taught hundreds of people how to play the flute in five minutes or less, and I can teach you too.
